Don’t Let Your A/C Hibernate Too Long: It’s Time to Wake It Up!

🧊 Bold Thought to Kick Things Off:
You wouldn’t trust a car to drive cross-country after sitting idle for 6 months without checking the tires or oil...So why crank up your A/C without giving it the same love? 💡
📚 Story #1: Dan & Marie's Muggy Homecoming
Every October, Florida’s highways fill with a familiar sight — cars with out-of-state plates, golf clubs in the trunk, and “Glad to Be Back!” bumper stickers.
Last week, I got a call from Dan and Marie — a retired couple from Michigan who just arrived at their Bradenton condo for the winter.
Dan walked in, punched the thermostat to “cool,” and... nothing. 🥵No air. No chill. Just sweat.
Turns out, their filter was clogged worse than a 90s pool noodle, and their thermostat batteries had given up sometime around Easter.
Simple fixes. Big relief. But it could’ve been worse — and more expensive — if they hadn’t called me when they did.
📚 Story #2: Bob’s Shower-Powered Air Conditioner
Then there’s Bob — a retired teacher from Buffalo with a great sense of humor and, this year, one weird mystery:
“David, I swear… my A/C only works when I take a shower. No shower, no cool air.”
You can’t make this stuff up. 😅
Here’s what happened: Bob forgot to switch his humidistat back to ON after arriving in Florida. His A/C was set to run only when humidity reached a certain level — and guess what cranks humidity sky-high for a few minutes?
👉 A hot, steamy shower.
So every morning, when Bob hit the shower, the A/C kicked in like magic... then went dead silent the rest of the day.

The fix? One switch. Five seconds. No more “humidity roulette.”
This is super common for snowbirds. If your A/C isn’t running like it should, check that humidistat.
✅ The A/C Wake-Up Checklist for Snowbirds
Before your A/C throws a Florida-sized tantrum, follow this simple checklist to avoid sweat, stress, and expensive surprises:
1. Check the Air Filter 🧽
Dust doesn’t take vacations. A dirty filter = poor airflow and high bills.
If it’s gray or fuzzy, toss it.
Replace every 30–90 days.
Sharpie the install date on the new one.
2. Test the Thermostat 🧠
It’s the brain of your system. Make sure it’s thinking clearly.
Set it to Cool
Pop in fresh batteries
Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for long-term savings
3. Flip the Humidistat 🔁
Got one? Don’t forget it!
Set it to ON (not Vacation mode)
Adjust it to 50–55% humidity
This tells your A/C to run based on moisture and temp
4. Inspect the Outdoor Unit 🌴
Look for:
Palm fronds
Debris
Rodent party remnants 🐿️
Clear 2–3 feet around it. If the fins are bent or something sounds weird, call in a pro.
5. Run a Test Cycle 🌀
Set your thermostat to 68°F. Let it run for 15 minutes.
Feel cold air? ✅
Hear weird noises? ❌
Is it shutting off too fast? ⚠️
Better to catch problems now than when guests are over and everyone’s sweating over the guac.

If you’re not sure where your humidistat is…If your thermostat looks like a microwave from 1998…Or if your air smells like last year’s socks...
